Democracy Commission Small Grants Program

Office of Public Affairs of the U.S. Embassy administers Democracy Commission Small This program was initiated in 1994 as a flexible mechanism to enable embassies to support initiatives that contribute to more open and competitive political and economic systems and the protection of human rights.

The implementing body at Sarajevo post is the Democracy Commission consisting of the Office of Public Affairs, USAID, Political and Economical section’s representatives, and is under authority of Deputy Chief of Mission-DCM. The Commission may award grants up to USD 24,000 primarily to indigenous non-profit , non-governmental organizations and independent media to carry out non-partisan projects to advance democracy and democratic values in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

This program supports initiatives that promote civil society; free flow of information (including support for independent media); transparency in government; public education and advocacy; association building; rule of law and legal reform; conflict resolution; human rights; civic education; environment; market economy; and ethnic, minority, and women’s equality; get-out to vote or other election issues; anti-trafficking and anti-corruption awareness campaign and training.

The Democracy Commission meets once a quarter to review proposals, which meet minimum criteria.
