Duende Quartet Plays to Capacity Crowds in Three BiH Cities
03/02/2007
As part of the State Department’s "American Music Abroad" program, the Duende Quartet toured Bosnia and Herzegovina February 26-March 2, playing to capacity crowds in Banja Luka, Brcko, and Sarajevo. The group’s unique style of blending the sounds of Latin and traditional jazz was particularly appreciated by jazz aficionados in all three cities, many of whom approached the group after the performances to request autographs and discuss trends in jazz and music more generally. In Banja Luka, Duende Quartet performed before a capacity crowd at the 350-seat Banski Dvor hall. In Brcko, the quartet’s performance served as the opening act for a weeklong celebration of the Brcko District’s 7th Anniversary. In Sarajevo, a number of leading musicians and artists attended a pre-performance reception at the Ambassador’s residence as well as the quartet’s final performance, held on Independence Day (March 1) as part of the annual Sarajevo Winter Festival. Throughout its busy tour of BiH, the quartet’s performances brought together people from different walks of life and persuasions, reinforcing the message that music can be a powerful unifying force.
