United States Embassy Hosted a Roundtable on Intellectual Property Rights in Sarajevo

Renowned U.S. IPR (Intellectual Property Rights) legal expert Mr. Joseph Beck spoke at the round-table discussion hosted by United States Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina, in cooperation with the Sarajevo Film Festival on Monday, August 18, 2008.  The audience included high-ranking representatives from several levels of law enforcement institutions of Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as key BiH and regional stakeholders from the film and other industries harmed by pirated and counterfeit goods. The aim of the round-table was to address the IPR issue in general with the special focus on the movie industry and to raise awareness among the key stakeholders. 

Effective protection of intellectual property rights in Bosnia and Herzegovina is still a major challenge. Working with the BiH government, the U.S. Embassy encourages greater adherence to existing intellectual property legislation and improved coordination among Bosnia’s law enforcement agencies. Additional enforcement measures are needed for Bosnia’s membership into the World Trade Organization and successful EU accession. The U.S. Embassy believes that building institutional capacity in the field of intellectual property protection is critical to meeting those goals. 

After the round-table, Mr. Joseph Beck addressed questions from numerous interested media representatives at the Sarajevo Film Festival press conference.
