Cultural Affairs Officer Ronald Hawkins speaks about "Diversity and Identity in America"

October 27, 2009

As October is Celebrate Diversity Month, Cultural Affairs Officer (CAO), Ronald Hawkins, held a lecture on October 22, 2009, entitled "Diversity and Identity in America" at the American Corner in Zenica. Mr. Hawkins spoke briefly about U.S. history, the importance of President Lincoln and the issues of slavery and segregation. He also discussed the way America was built by immigrants, the waves of immigration to the U.S., reactions to the newly arrived, immigration law, and civil courage. He ended his presentation by saying that the continuing commitment of the United States to progress and the ways it celebrates its diversity could serve as examples to Bosnia and Herzegovina in addressing the issues that the country is faced with today. The lecture drew a lot of interest from the audience; students stayed after the official ending of the presentation and continued the discussion with the CAO. Forty-three students attended the lecture.
