U.S. Citizen Services

Federal Benefits

The Consular Section performs limited services for claimants and beneficiaries who have official business with benefit-paying agencies such as the Social Security Administration (SSA), the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA), and the Department of Labor (DL). The Federal Benefits Unit (FBU) at the U.S. Embassy in Athens is responsible for the region including Bosnia and Herzegovina, while the Federal Benefits Office directly in charge is located at American Embassy Zagreb, and can be contacted at +385-1-661-2272 for questions involving federal benefits. The Consular Section Sarajevo does not process any claims for benefits, but forwards such claims to the FBU Embassy Zagreb or Athens.

The Consular Section in Sarajevo receives monthly benefits checks for a small number of beneficiaries residing in BIH and distributes them by mail or in person.

You may obtain information about applying for a Social Security number, replacements for lost Social Security Cards and other information by visiting the Social Security Administration website at http://ssa.gov/.
