Correcting The Record on Claims Regarding President Bush And BiH Constitutional Reform

The Department of State wishes to correct the record.  President Bush has not engaged in any discussions of the Council of Europe recommendations on the constitution of Bosnia and Herzegovina.  Reports that he has are inaccurate.

It is well known that the United States continues to strongly support and urge the early adoption of the package of constitutional amendments agreed to by the six political parties in March.

As Secretary Rice said at the time, their adoption would be “a decisive step forward for Bosnia and Herzegovina and would advance Bosnia and Herzegovina’s aspirations to join NATO and the EU.

This was also the position adopted at the October 20 Peace Implementation Council Ministerial.
