2008 Press Releases

Release of the United States Government's 2007 Country Reports on Human Right Practices

March 11, 2008

On Tuesday, March 11, 2008 at 17:00, the United States Government will release the 2007 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices.  The report for Bosnia and Herzegovina can be found in English in its entirety on the US Embassy webpage at the following web address:
http://sarajevo.usembassy.gov/hr2007.html

The report reflects that, in general, the government of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s human rights record remained poor.  Although there were improvements in some areas in 2007, serious problems remained.  Among the concerns noted in the report were:

  • police abuses
  • poor and overcrowded prison conditions
  • increased harassment and intimidation of journalists and members of civil society
  • discrimination and violence against women and ethnic and religious minorities
  • discrimination against persons with disabilities and sexual minorities
  • obstruction of refugee return
  • trafficking in persons
  • limits on employment rights.

The United States encourages all political leaders, from all parties and levels of government, to respect the rights of all citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina and to take measures to improve the fundamental human rights conditions in the country.
