2008 Press Releases

Statement by the United States Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina

September 12, 2008

The United States is extremely concerned over the conclusion adopted on September 11 by the Republika Srpska Government regarding Elektroprenos BiH (TRANSCO).

The RS government conclusion raises profound constitutional questions, seeks to nullify illegally a state law, sets back reform efforts for the entire country and is politically reckless. Also, the conclusion seriously sets back Bosnia and Herzegovina's European aspirations and runs counter to repeated claims by the Republika Srpska Government officials that they are committed to BiH's European path.

With the full support of the United States, the Peace Implementation Council has made clear that an entity cannot unilaterally reverse competencies transferred to the state or withdraw unilaterally from a previously agreed reform.  The United States expects the RS Government to revoke its conclusion and to continue to work within the established institutions and laws of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
