This Warden Message alerts U.S. citizens to a demonstration planned for Thursday, June 18, 2009 beginning approximately at 10:00 a.m. on Alipasina Street, in front of the Federation Government Building next to the U.S. Embassy. The police estimate that this protest of Bosnian war veterans will include about 10,000 people, while the organizers predict up to 30,000 participants. Alipasina Street from Skenderija to the Zetra Hall will be closed as early as 8 a.m. It is uncertain how long the demonstration will last. The U.S. Embassy will conduct limited operations during the time of the demonstration with essential personnel only reporting for duty. The Consular Section’s American Citizen Services Unit will continue to handle emergency cases. The number to contact in case of an emergency is (033) 445-700, ex. 2210.
We remind American citizens that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence. American citizens are therefore urged to avoid this area if possible, and to exercise caution if within the vicinity. American citizens should stay current with media coverage of local events and be aware of their surroundings at all times.
Americans traveling abroad should regularly monitor the U.S. Embassy’s website as well as the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Consular Affairs website at www.travel.state.gov , where the current Worldwide Caution, Travel Warnings, Travel Alerts, and Country Specific Information can be found.
